On the Field

The ability to respond to emergency situations in a variety of athletic settings is one of the skills that sets athletic trainers apart from many other health care professionals. This module reviews the importance of emergency planning and provides an overview on the basics of general injury evaluation and assessment.

This module is to be completed 100% on-line with no face to face class period on 10/6/16

Required Reading:

Chapter 11 of the AT Primer textbook

Please read pages 15-18 in the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook

Learning Objectives

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this module the students will be able to:

Know the difference between a primary and secondary injury survey

Describe the components of a physical exam

Appreciate the importance and obligation of adequate emergency response plans

Explain the key components to an emergency response plan

Discuss the essential role of the AED in ECC

Differentiate the portions of the SOAP format

Apply the SAMPLE approach to taking a medical history

ASSIGNMENT:

Module 6 incorporates information from your textbook, the NCAA handbook, and the narrated presentation to review emergency planning and the basics of evaluation. For your short homework please review the NCAA guideline for emergency care and coverage. Write a one to two page overview of how the athletic trainer fits into the components described (1-11). Think about the role the AT may plan in each of the components. What might they "do" to insure this guideline is followed.
