Module #11: The Shoulder

On the Field

Injuries to the shoulder gridle are common in sports and physical activity. They range from the overuse injuries associated with overhead activities to acute trauma from fractures and dislocations. The shoulder is a shallow ball and socket joint that has substantial range of motion. Unlike the stable hip, the shoulder can be unstable. Stability is compromised with increased mobility. Since humans walk upright and use our arms for many activities this high level of mobility is desirable; but is comes at a price. We will learn about a variety of injuries, conditions, and special considerations for the upper extremity during the first half of Unit III.
