This piece is built around deep layers of symbolism. The Christ child is held by Mary, standing with the crusifix at her back and the dog, which represents faithfullness, at her feet. The four archangles were present at the most important moments of His life on earth. They were present at his birth, as represented by Mary. They prepared to defend him when he was arrested, as shown by the soldier on horseback. They witnessed His resurrection, represented by the eagle, and the ascension to Heaven, the butterfly. The tweleve disciples are shown to represent his life's work. Peter's eyes are downcast for his betrayal. The cock is symbol of the passion (John 13:38).
