Funny you should mention people from the Middle East (including the very sizable middle eastern Christian populations here in the US). I was just thinking about the issue of those who are unseen because they don't fit the pigeon holes we have created.

Supposedly there are a million Romani in the US and yet you rarely hear of them. Partly, presumably, because their experience of being marked out by their ethnicity has in the past been catastrophic. We are focused to some degree on peoples who want to be noticed, but what of those who wish to not be noticed?

We have really been focusing on the big census categories which is understandable to a degree but we miss out on all the great micro-stories of diversity: the Cape Verdeans in Massachusetts, the Finns in Michigan, the Greek Orthodox, Armenians, Persians, etc. I think the more we can focus on the individual story and its merits the better. Big pigeon holes served a purpose but they can be constraining as well.

My second and last post today, as our discussion on diversity winds down. I have found it of great interest and am saving a number of particularly thoughtful and helpful contributions--such as Christine's and Debbie's lists of what they DO want
