I'd like to second the idea that MANY teens are reading voraciously from the YA collections in their schools and public libraries. Let's also remember that while they may not be purchasing large numbers of books themselves, their parents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, etc. are often purchasing books as gifts for them. I don't even want to think of the amount of money I spent purchasing books for my teen children, nieces, and nephews.

Pam

I don't know much about how these statistics are calculated, but how are purchases by libraries figured? Certainly among the young adults at my school, a typical student purchases at most 1-2 books a year, but they read many more that are purchased by the school and by the public library.

Particularly if we're talking about youth who don't have a lot of spare dollars, defining them by purchasing power alone seems dangerous.
