Why the Beatles?
The Beatles have been familiar to many people since they hit the airwaves. My father listened to them as a young man and then shared them with me and my siblings as we were growing up. My best friend in middle school was obsessed with them. I think they are a group that has spoken to many generations so readers of all ages have at least a passing connection to that collection of music.
My relationship with my father was a difficult one, but music was something that bridged the gap. I have many troubling memories from my childhood, but music was something to hold onto. It's hard to stay angry at someone when you are singing Beatles music together at the top of your lungs. Those moments of music together are some of the positives that I can look back on fondly.
For me, the book brought back some of those memories with my father, but also middle school memories in my friends' room sprawled on the bed listening to Beatle albums one after another. They were a great group for the teenage years. They sang about love, social justice, and flat out silliness among other things.
I found the music a nice thread woven through the story. Somehow I had missed the Paul conspiracy as a teen though, so that was interesting.
