Tanya is indeed a good example of that principle. Tanya does what many other researchers writing about ethnic subjects often do not. She seeks out and interviews the subjects when possible, she delves deep into the life of those individuals, and then she seeks out independent opinions about whether she has approached the subject matter in a culturally sensitive way.
In effect, she has a well tuned ear that goes beyond scholarly texts and archives and incorporates the nuances appropriate for the subject. She earns the trust of her subjects.
Tanya deserves the NAACP image award - and it is a big step forward that the awards, unlike CSK, now honor people of all races for their work.

This is a perfect example of the way nonfiction allows anyone who has the passion, commitment, and scholarship to investigate a subject, and the skill, craft, and determination to find the best words and images, to share any story. As Tanya has so brilliantly shown us -- history (science, math) belongs to all of us. May the Triple Nickel inspire us all.
