Thanks, Tim,
It's not trouble when it's part of your life. All the things you suggest arise naturally out of good relationships, grounded in love and thoughtfulness, over time. Holding babies is just the lovely beginning. It's the weddings and graduations, funerals and hospital and prison visits, the navigating of sometimes tricky conversations around need and money. The give and take in both directions. And I'd say that writers who are not Native American also need to ask (and listen to the answers) what is okay to share, and with whom, and how. As the conversations deepen in mutual respect, the stories are enriched.
And yes, Katherine--I just read your message--that's it exactly. Not speaking for others, but including all our relationships in our writing. Thanks for understanding and saying this so well.
(And, though I do know what you're saying, I'm careful about putting all social workers and teachers or even missionaries into one category, as that can become a stereotype of its own.)

I know, that sounds like quite a bit of trouble to add an Indian character to your book. If you do go to that trouble, you might hear an elder ask, "What took you so long?"
