Storytelling in Print

A question for Tim, from Lucine:

Cinco Puntos touched on this a bit, but can Tim elaborate upon how age-old oral storytelling techniques may have had to be tweaked to succeed in print form? I don't mean so much the explaining of cultural motifs that would be unfamiliar to non-Native Americans. I guess I am referring to narrative techniques. (I have certainly dealt with this myself in translating from the Armenian oral tradition.) Thanks!
