I don't quite understand this reading, either. I don't see it as at all inappropriate, or somehow self-serving-- especially given the backdrop of the ongoing discussion here this month-- to place this particular book within the larger context of other representations of Native peoples in American children's literature. Certainly a consideration of the ways in which this book might speak within that context, and against a different narrative, serves us all.
I must also admit to a discomfort here, and in the larger discussion, with what can feel like a silencing of the perspectives of people speaking from the actual backgrounds and experiences supposedly being considered.
