This conversation keeps bringing me back to a mental ven diagram -- three circles representing books written BY, FOR, and ABOUT a diversity of people/characters. Which is to say there is (of course) a value in increasing the presence and availability of books in each of those categories, but also that the places where those categories do and don't overlap are worth considering as distinct pieces of the overall goal here.
- Books by authors of color (or for that matter, LGBTQ authors) that show kids who share that demographic a piece of their own experience
- Books about characters of color (or LGBTQ characters) that EVERYONE should be reading
- Books by authors from outside any given population about a diversity of characters/experiences
Etc.
I don't think this is a news flash, and in fact, this discussion has touched on all of the above. Nor are these theoretical "sub-category" books all mutually exclusive. But I've wondered more than once (as someone who is not nearly as well versed in this topic as a lot of the frequent posters to this listserv) if and when we're taking about BY, FOR, or ABOUT, and in which combination. That's not a complaint....just something I'm naming as a potential point of clarification/refinement in future discussions.
