Multicultural publihsing

A question…one I am fond of asking in different forums, about books…but first...

In publishing, personnel at one company may call a colleague at another company and ask for a free copy of X book. When I started out…I worked for St. Martin's Press which, at the time, was a tiny company…I was in my late twenties and headed their tiny children's book department. Frank Upjohn, the president, had a rule against calling a colleague for a free book…one had to go to a bookstore and buy it with one's own money. And, I learned…sometimes I went to a bookstore and bought the book I had intended to buy…sometimes, I bought another instead…sometimes I left empty handed…and I thought about why. My salary at the time…$6, 500 a year…my share of the rent was $90.00/month…picture books retailed for $2.95…novels….$4.95. I sometimes bought books instead of going to a movie, or, occasionally dining out on a hamburger…

Decades later…the late Larry Hughes , the wonderfully gifted CEO of the then William Morrow ( it and all of its imprints are now part of Harper)…was weary of the number of free books the company was giving away…excluding those given for review/business purposes…. and at a sales conference said…he had a friend who was an executive at Brooks Brothers but it would never occur to him to call and ask for a free shirt.

There are those who justify the practice by saying…the best form of promotion is a free book…but…a free book does not earn royalties for the writer, the illustrator, nor does it contribute toward paying off the expenses for producing the book…the paper, the printing, etc.

So…for fun….and along those lines but not to be answered out loud…..

How many books with a multicultural theme have you bought for yourself, or another with your own money in the last year…two years, etc. This excludes purchases made for classrooms, libraries, etc. It concerns books one reads for pleasure and/or would like someone else to read for pleasure.

If none, or, few were bought….you/your reasons represent the majority of the American public…have a think…..Norma Jean
