your point is very important. While I have argued for keeping the books on the shelves and using them for critical thinking, I also would agree with you that there is a time and a place for introducing those books, a way to do it sensitively (we shouldn't bulldoze in there and create harm), and that this time frame and process can vary from kid to kid. Sensitivity is always the key. We analyze all sorts of texts in my college classrooms but they are adults....and even then, I always caution my students to be respectful of others because otherwise, they sometimes forget. Even more important in a classroom of kids...
