(I sent this a few days ago to the wrong address and hope it is still helpful even though the conversation has gone in other interesting directions.)
I wanted to second the recommendation of the Africana Awards<http://www.africaaccessreview.org/aar/awards.html>. Their site, Africa Access Review<http://www.africaaccessreview.org/aar/index.html>, is a fabulous resource for books about Africa published in the US. The variety of books they feature is excellent and I've come across new favorites thanks to them. Some of them are in my recent Horn Book article, "Books About Africa<http://www.hbook.com/2014/01/choosing-books/horn-book-magazine/books-africa/#_>" in which I consider the different ways American children currently engage with Africa via their books and other media, providing some recommendations.
I also want to recommend Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi's adult book, *Americanah
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americanah>, *as it is both a superb novel in itself and also a vivid and real portrayal of one African woman and her experiences interacting with American black culture. I think it is something to keep in mind when we think of children in this situation as well.
All the best, Monica
