I emphatically agree with JL Powers -- which is, for example, I encourage libraries to keep a 9 Planets book -- so we can show students how ideas change over time.
One of the great things about the Common Core is that it insists that all writing, fiction and NF, has a POV, and that we must train students to identify evidence, recognize arguments, compare arguments, understand opposing views, and then articulate a position. Indeed in Gerald Graff, Cathy Birkenstein, They Say, I Say -- an excellent book for teaching students writing -- they encourage having students first write from the position they disagree with, and inhabit it so fully no one knows what they actually think, then, from a deep knowledge of the opposing view, critique it.
The goal is not to purify our shelves but, rather, to deepen students' ability to read critically, think deeply, question -- us -- constantly, and arrive at their own views -- even if totally different from ours.
