I listened to it, too, Tricia, and wondered if we drew parallels for her about her own people and violence towards them, and then 'the victors' telling a story that pretty much misrepresents and distorts that history, if she'd feel the same way towards those books.

When I started this MLIS a few years ago, some of the people who counter my writing said things like "you'll see" that what I was advocating was censorship and in the LIS world, WRONG. To the contrary! It isn't censorship to raise questions, and it isn't censorship to remove books, either. I learned about the CREW guidelines about weeding children's books.

Here's the link: https://www.tsl.texas.gov/sites/default/files/public/tslac/ld/pubs/crew/crewmethod08.pdf

At the bottom of page 29, it says "Consider discarding older fiction especially when it has not circulated in the past two or three years. Also look for books that contain stereotyping, including stereotypical images and views of people with disabilities and the elderly, or gender and racial biases."

Now, we all know that LHOP still circulates. But do we need 10 copies of it?

If we take seriously ALA guidelines about balance in the collection, then we need to remove so many of those books and increase the numbers of books that provide a balance to that particular book. We might, in a snarky moment, say that a balance for LHOP would be a book that has derogatory images of white people, because that is one part of what needs to be countered in that book, but that's not what I'm after. We have several historical fiction books that misrepresent American Indians. Caddie Woodlawn is another. How to displace the images they have? How about a one-to-one match? If your library has four copies of books that misrepresent American Indians (say, 3 copies of LHOP and 1 copy of CW), how about 4 copies of Birchbark House? The problem with that is that it somehow legitimizes the misrepresentations in LHOP.
