Dear Friends,

Yesterday morning I heard an author on Weekend Edition describing her new book. She talked about how she was inspired by the Little House books. Here’s an excerpt.

“But I was obsessed with these books and obsessed with the way they depicted family and food. And it wasn't until I was an adult rereading the books that I realized that probably why I was so interested in the books is because the Ingalls are pioneers in the mid-to-late 1800s moving westward, searching for a new home. And my own family had come from Vietnam in 1975. And our experience as immigrants, you know, moving to the West and searching for a new home was parallel to the Ingalls' experience as pioneers.”

After hearing this, all I could think about was the depth and breadth of the conversation we’ve been having, and how meaningful books are that parallel the range of human experience. What is disappointing is that there were no books for her that reflected more closely her own experiences.

It’s an interesting piece if you would like to listen to it. http://www.npr.org/2014/02/09/274075426/a-vietnamese-pioneer-modeled-on-an-american-legend

I guess I’m also surprised at how many people hold these books dear. I work with several homeschool groups here that hold this book up as a standard of “wholesomeness.” (That’s their word, not mine.) Debbie has written extensively about the books in this series, yet it is a classic that families and teachers still hand their children. I suppose this gets to the difficulty of the conversation that Sarah mentioned in her post. If librarians begin to discuss the inherent problems in a book, refuse to purchase or promote, does this become censorship?

Thanks to all for this thought-provoking conversation. I have more questions than answers, but this is a good thing. Best, Tricia
