I'm a numbers nerd and don't disagree But I will also tell you that - again - we get what we measure. I recognized when working in the corporate world that numbers skew based on what you choose to look for or what scenario you want to validate.

And if budgets are shifted to include more diversity - we need discussion on WHAT diversity that is. Using more dollars for books that exacerbate the problem (those commonly targeted to black history month) will result in very little consumer interest. Sorry to say. We need kids to want to read independently - that is very seldom discussed in "needs".

We need to focus on more mainstream and speculative content to get those kids reading. And if I can be blunt - more middle class and upper class offerings which is where you'll find a significant amount of consumer purchasing power in "my" community.

An example - many African Americans applaud the attention paid to movies such as Twelve Years a Slave, Fruitvale Station and The Butler - in public. But in private, the chasm shifts and you find that those lauds are not from the younger generation who are sick of that being the only image they get.

Maybe focusing dollars on books children crave, instead of books adults still mired in guilt want them to have might move the needle on independent reading. I can tell you booklists and reading preferences from local minority children and you won't find race-based angst on those lists…….Christine

Our space is a very amped up when it comes to the earnest raw emotion and passion, and most if not all of us are word/visual people who naturally do gravitate toward math. But we need to study the numbers, draw conclusions from them, and set concrete goals.
