Thank you for this write-up, Christine.
Last summer at ALA, I went around to most of the publishers telling them that I teach a class, Global Contexts and Social Justice in Youth Lit, and that I was interested in new material.
Each encounter was pretty awkward, and I did get handed some folktales. Then I received the sheepish look and comment, "Nope, it looks like we don't have anything that would work for you."
I'm glad/sad to hear of similar experiences.
