Christine, thank you so much for that link. The statistics Kyra Hicks has compiled are fascinating. I wonder what the percentages would be if we just looked at the award winners from the last 15 years. My guess is there would be even fewer illustrators winning 75% of the awards.

I know it is very hard for new authors and illustrators to compete when they are put up against the likes of Walter Dean Myers, Jerry Pinkney, and Kadir Nelson. I was on the Coretta Scott King Award Task Force when the John Steptoe Award was created, and that was the main reason we saw a need for the New Talent Award -- we recognized this challenge and still wanted to have a way to encourage those just starting out. I am always really disappointed in the years the committee doesn't give a New Talent award.

The authors and illustrators who win the Coretta Scott King Award over and over are among the best in the field of children's literature. Anyone who feels this award is "marginal" and ignores it is missing out on some great children's books.

Krya Hicks has done an interesting job creating a statical look at CSK here for several years, but stopped as doing it after this post - I suspect because the dismal numbers were barely changing from year to year.:

As of 2012 she calculated that 26 authors had won 67% of all the CSK awards and 17 illustrators had won 75% of the awards granted since 1970.

She goes on to say there were five years in which CSK was not able to name ANY new talent for writing or illustration.
