Positive Developments

I've seen a few positive developments in the well-established review journals, including *Kirkus'* reviews of independently published books. I think these reviews draw attention to more writers and illustrators of color, as well as others who may not be able to get published through more traditional channels but have voices worth hearing.

In response to the native books thread, I also saw that *Kirkus* had two books by native authors -- Julie Flett's *Wild Berries* (Simply Read) and Tim Tingle's *How I Became a Ghost* (The Road Runner Press) -- on its list of best children's books of 2013. I recently read reviews of these books in The *Horn Book*, too. (Disclaimer: I have no relationship with either of these journals). In addition, I don't know if I would have discovered the wonderful board book *Little You*, by Richard Van Camp and Julie Van Fleet, if it wasn't one of CCBC's "Books of the Week."

I think this kind of spotlight makes a difference in discovering books that might have gone unnoticed-- at least it has for me.
