Multicolor publishing

Wearing my former publisher's hat…

Most publishers have the authority to acquire a manuscript for an advance of x dollars without permission…the amount varies depending on the publisher. When I last held that title…I could, without "permission," acquire a manuscript for an advance up to, and including $50,000 without clearing it with anyone…so could my two colleagues who headed separate imprints. For advances between $50,000-$100,000, I needed permission from one person…my boss, who headed the trade division. For advances over that amount, permission was needed from the CEO, which sometimes, included the board of directors.

It was, of course, necessary to have an accurate P&L statement before an advance/contract was offered for every manuscript one acquired.

A long winded way of saying…one cannot blame the accountants for the lack of multicolor books…for that matter, any genre. There is a wide spread in advances paid for material in every category….

Barnes and Noble…they know what sells in their stores countrywide. It is their job to know and to order accordingly. What sells in B&N, is not necessarily what sells in an independent bookstore, or other outlets. There is sometimes fun at sales conference…which can be the sales reps talking about their experiences selling certain books…a rep in one part of the country would say x book did well in his /her territory..others would say that same book was a tough sell in their territory. On it went, clear across the country. There were books that did well in every territory, others that failed in every territory…

As this discussion continues, I hope the above observations will be useful….Norma Jean
