Book title, anyone?

I have a patron looking for a book and here is her description:
"I am looking for a book that I read when I was a child. It was jfic from the 1970's. The story was of two children, a boy and a girl, that discovered that when they walked a certain pattern on a boardwalk, they got transferred to an alternate world. I saw a book review in the late 1990's (probably 1998 suggesting it as a good read for children in a Buffalo area paper or magazine and I cut it out for safe keeping. Unfortunately, I lost the piece of paper and would like help finding the title again so my children can read it."
