As someone currently working on a book based largely on memoirs, diaries, oral history interviews, and other first person and primary source accounts of an event, I definitely agree that they do not always correctly reflect names, dates, and other specifics of the incidents as depicted in newspapers and scholarly accounts. But, that said, there are definitely emotional truths that I'm trying to capture that come through best in many of the memory pieces I have looked at. And that truth too is quite valid--even if quoting some of these subjects interviewed about their experiences can become a tricky thing in some instances. And yes, this is yet another reason why, where possible and applicable, noting the sources is essential--especially when it gets into the Roshomon of even those who were there looking at occurrences from their own unique perspectives.
