Marc points us to KT Horning's excellent work, and I wonder if editors ask their authors to read it?

If there are editors on CCBC, I'd love to hear from you. What do you ask your authors to read?

I finished my analysis of Craighead George's THE BUFFALO ARE BACK. One thing I didn't write much about was the bibliography. I could have, though, and may go back and add that. It may not be her bib. It says "the artist" so it may only be the sources used by Minor. Either way, they're old, dating 1989, 1973, and 1987. Here's the link to my review: ead-georges-buffalo-are-back.html

Here's my request for writers and editors on CCBC...

When doing research/vetting of manuscripts that have ANYTHING to do with American Indians, quit using old sources! In the 60s and 70s, several journals were launched. SAIL is the journal of the Association for the Study of American Indian Literatures.

There are others:

Wicazo Sa Review American Indian Quarterly American Indian Culture and Research Journal Journal of American Indian Education

And there are a great many new books, too, written by Native and non-Native scholars in (or affiliated with) American Indian Studies programs.

A couple of incredibly helpful encyclopedias are a good starting place. Both are old (90s) but they're light-years ahead of most of what I see in children's books published today. Here's my link to those sources: or-american-indian-research.html

I'd love to see notes of the kind Marc suggests, and the sources I recommend (journals and books) will help anyone who is doing anything at all with American Indian content write notes that tell us how their thinking has shifted.

Garth Nix did that, and I think its a terrific model for other writes to use. Here's my link about his essay (it is in his ACROSS THE WALL). n-aboriginal-stories.html
