Many years ago, I worked at a library where we did group selection...we rec eived a picture book on branding of farm animals...the manager in charge fo und it terribly offensive...and, I'm sorry to say we didn't buy it...someti mes selection is also a workplace political issue. None of the younger libr arians (including myself) wanted to go against her directive by defending t he book and adding it to our collections...

Vicki Smith wrote about the problem of the lack of hunting book for kids in the September/October 2004 issue of the Horn Book -- available online -- t he piece is called "A Hunting We Won't Go"
I am sorry if talk of hunting and battle and books and kids upsets some her e, but these are real and true and in many respects valid interests of youn g people and the problem is not their lack of desire to read -- and read go od, responsible, thoughtful, books -- it is our discomfort. And that is som ething we need to face. A profession committed to intellectual freedom must constantly be alert to its own biases.
