"I look at Pat's helpful list of what her kids want, and it seems to me tha t much of the list is exactly the kinds of things that one can, in fact, look up quickly and effectively on Google. Want to do origami? There are undoubtedly thousands of youtube videos that are more useful than most books could possibly be these days (ignoring the ipad). Ditto sports and entertainment figures, world records, the latest on dinosaurs, etc."
There are many reasons kids want and need these types of non-fiction: We have many children who have no computers in their homes or homes with no Internet access (even wealthier families have no Internet due to their loc ation in rural settings) Young family members are often no allowed to use the one computer in a hous ehold -- not my idea, but it's true! The language on videos or websites are often not at a level the younger stu dents can understand. Students need to learn to read and follow directions -- these types of book s make it fun! Books are self-paced, videos are not! I just love to watch a little fellow ponder the way some experiement or paper plane is made -- sometimes they s tay on the same page for 10 mins. -- examining it from all angles.
When dealing with small children, many givens aren't so. We need all types of resources! Erlene
