To the contrary ... I feel my graduate education strongly encouraged me to be collaborative. It is the administration in schools that is not. I've advocated for three years since I started in this district to examine the fixed schedule and how it is taking learning opportunities away from staff and students. But it is to no avail. I'm hoping a curriculum revision process will help me present the case, but I'm not optimistic. Teachers have too much on their plates, and unfortunately we are not being considered as someone who can share in the responsibility but instead as someone who can give them a break from their kids.

It has also been my experience in traveling to schools across the country, that there is often little or no cross-pollination between the library and the classroom.
I agree – even under the best of circumstances, collaboration between libraries and classrooms is frustratingly weak in many, many schools to the detriment of the students and their reading of nonfiction texts. But it won’t change in any significant way until graduate teacher education classes require substantive coursework with libraries, library schools, and librarians.
