It has also been my experience in traveling to schools across the country, that there is often little or no cross-pollination between the library and the classroom.
I agree - even under the best of circumstances, collaboration between libraries and classrooms is frustratingly weak in many, many schools to the detriment of the students and their reading of nonfiction texts. But it won't change in any significant way until graduate teacher education classes require substantive coursework with libraries, library schools, and librarians.
