"True books" is what my elementary school students called them, t oo, Celeste. I love that label. I have not been able to come up with a bett er alternative than "nonfiction" and "informational book." Of course, if yo u start analyzing the phrase, you get into the sticky wicket of "what is tr uth"? In an earlier post, Marc Aronson came up with something like "beautif ully packaged idea book," which sounds wonderful but I don't see that one c atching on.

Marc Aronson's concluding remark makes me think: Is it time for another debate on this perennia lly unsatisfactory term "nonfiction"? It's such a clumsy, negative, n on-suggestive term . . . yet I can't think of anything better as a comprehe nsive category.
