For me, the first book did stand on its on. I saw Lyra's world as parallel to our own (clearly Oxford, England) though different. The ending of the first does bridge to the second, but it did end (as opposed to book #2). I found the inclusion of our own world in The Subtle Knife a bit jarring at first. In reading the Golden Compass, I had the feeling of being absorbed in a fantasy world, however much like our own, and never expected to be led to our own world.

As I wrote in an earlier post, I think books 2 and 3 in the series really need the first, and each other, but I think Golden Compass does work well on its own, and for younger readers than the later two books.
