Monica, than you for mentioning this terrific short novel by Philip Pullman. I hope others have had a chance to read it and that someone will respond to your query about solo readers.

In addition to being an excellent classroom read-aloud, it's a book I've recommended to a lot of families as well, who are reading to children of varying ages. Young children will be able to follow the simple plot line and enjoy the Cinderella twist, while older kids and adults will enjoy Pullman's social satire.

It's always a rare pleasure to find the sort of book that has a level for adult readers as well as for children, without feeling as though the author is winking over the child's head at another adult.
