Dear Monica,
I read that to our second graders aloud and they LOVED it! I think it would be a great story to read with young students and have them design their own newspaper with humor...I thought that part was the best. I put up the illustrations on an OH so they could really see the illustrations.
On the whole, I have enjoyed Pullman's other novels alot more than the Golden Compass trilogy (such as Clockworks) which I feel is just too much! Somehow it is not as gripping AND straightforward as Tolkein...just loaded down with everything..for mw his stand alone novels are just delightful in a quirky way.
