audio enjoyment of His Dark Materials

Do I have time to sneak in one more message about Pullman's trilogy? I heartily agree with Sharon Grover who enjoyed hearing the books rather than just reading them. I read the stories aloud to my sons as each book came out
(the boys are now 12 and 14 and we're almost done with Amber Spyglass), and we enjoyed the first two books a second time during car trips, playing those wonderful audio versions.

It has taken us quite awhile to finish reading The Amber Spyglass--my sons have too much homework for us to spend hours reading anymore--but the time delay has heightened the tension and given us space to digest the impact of the ending. I admit, we have fifty pages or so left, but the ending does not feel trite or letdown to us (so far). So much action is packed into the third novel that a speedy reader might skim by the importance of some scenes. We have plowed through bit by bit and have had time to make connections, envision impacts, and imagine what might come next. Perhaps on a second reading, others will pick up new clues and see the final book of His Dark Materials in a more positive light.
