His Dark Materials

I'm enjoying this discussion so much. I've been thinking of how Philip Pullman's books seem to often explore the theme of loss/separation/death. The Sally Lockhart trilogy, _Clockwork_ and _The White Mercedes_ all deal with death/loss, although in very different ways, and in His Dark Materials Pullman has written scenes that are heart wrenching, gripping and emotional. All are memorable (the death of Roger especially), but nothing prepared me for the anguish I felt when Lyra enters into the world of death in _The Amber Spyglass_. It is masterful writing and something I, for one, will never forget.
