Lee Scoresby

I was intrigued to see the response the death of Lee Scoresby had on a number of respondants to this list. While he did willingly give his life to help Lyra escape and continue her quest, I was not impressed by him as a true character. When he is speaking with Seraphina in the ballon on their way to Svalbard he begins expressing his love for Lyra and how he would do anything to help, she's like the daughter he would love to have, etc. I don't know where this came all of a sudden. Did it revolve around her respect for Iorek and helping him to gain his armor back? Now Iorek is a character I would have cried about if he had died, but Lee Scoresby???? I was touched, but don't think he truly warrants the outpouring of emotion we're seeing here regardless of the selfless act of sacrifice.
