One more comment about Marc Simont, if you don't mind.
I just got a new copy of A TREE IS NICE, and I read it aloud to a couple of different classes. I was impressed by it all over again. The wonderful simple words of Udry are matched by the seemingly simple but well thought out illustrations of Simont. I loved the way he started out before the title page with, not a half-title, but a picture of one tree. It looks like a Japanese print. A different way of doing a half-title. He gets so much in a line throughout the book. I can't express how I appreciate the feeling he gets into a line. Humor, liveliness, beauty are all expressed and more. It deserved the Caldecott.
