I was just telling Jonathan on the adbooks list that my 9 year old daughter has finished the first two books and has started on The Amber Spyglass. I was really surprised, both at her interest and at the speed she was able to read and comprehend these books. She hasn't been this excited about a book since she read A Little Princess earlier in the year. Then, as now, I lost her for a couple of weeks. She only surfaced to eat and then usually with book in front of her face. It's quite fun to watch, actually. I was concerned with some of the darker content when she first started but it doesn't seem to bother her. She likes the fact that he includes it because it "treats her like a grown-up" Whatever she doesn't understand I suppose is just being filtered away.
I'm certainly going to be interested in how she feels about the ending considering the fact that I found it weak. I probably won't have to wait long at the rate she's reading! :-)
