His Dark Materials

From the discussion so far, His Dark Materials obviously appeals to people on a variety of levels. For me, I really think the strength of the series is its storytelling and characters. The points he wants to make about Christianity as it exists in "our" world are fascinating, but during my personal reading experience I pretty much chose to ignore them. If a person was totally ignorant of Christianity, I still think nearly every element of the series would work as pure storytelling. You still think about free will and sin and all that, but you don't necessarily have to fit it into a Christian context. Like so many kids, I first read Narnia without getting the Christian parallels, and I can't imagine that my experience could have been any more powerful than it was. I think most young readers will react the same way to HDM.
