Bigger quilt picNora's and My Quilt

Nora's and My Quilt was a collaboration with my husband's Grandmother, Nora Roth Werner (1898-1978). My father-in-law gave me a box of unfinished quilt blocks several years ago. Although I'd never met her, I'd always wanted to finish the quilt for her. There was one single bed quilt top and a lot of blocks of different sizes and patterns. We have a king size bed and I wanted to make something we could use. It was difficult to cut into the completed top and I wanted it to be very clear which was her part and which was mine, so I decided to leave the cut edges raw. I wanted the pain of cutting into someone else's work to show. I also wanted to show the delight of making a whole out of the unfinished fragments, so I sewed the seams with gold thread. Sometimes it was two or three rows of gold stitching to emphasize those connections. In the tradition of quilters I used only fabrics I had on hand for the back. I combined fabrics bought for their beautiful patterns and never made into anything and fabrics that I had printed in an undergraduate class 25 years ago!
