For many years I've read the digests with my morning coffee and learned so much from all of you. Thank you for all you have done. Like many others I'll miss the list but will certainly explore your new resources. Long live the CCBC!

Dear K.T:
Thank you so much for your insights and perseverance. Although I've been
largely a lurker, I've valued this conversation. Times are changing very
quickly these days, but insights into human nature and making literature
accessible to kids is timeless.

Dear CCBC-Net Community,
When CCBC-Net began in the spring of 1995, we wanted to offer a new way to
engage in discussion of books for children and teens. Our first topical
discussion was held in July of that year. We've been exploring individual books,
topics and issues in the world of literature for children and teens on a monthly
basis ever since.
Across CCBC-Net's twenty year history, there have been thousands of posts as
you, members of the CCBC-Net community, have shared your insights, observations,
perspectives, experiences, and enthusiasm around books for youth. At the time
we launched CCBC-Net, listservs were on the cutting edge, and ours allowed for a
vibrant, lively discussion of subjects near and dear to our hearts and our
professions. We have had over 2,000 subscribers from all over the world and from
many walks of life, and the listserv has seen some great discussions.
Today, while listservs still have a place, they have been joined by blogs,
Twitter feeds, Pinterest posts, and other forms of social media that offer
different ways to connect and engage. Listservs are no longer the go-to form of
social media for discussion and, as a result, we have observed a sharp decline
in activity on CCBC-Net over the past few years. Our attempt to revitalize
CCBC-Net in 2014 with changes that included individual book discussions and Q&A
with authors and illustrators - while illuminating -- did little to increase
participation.
For this reason, after much consideration and discussion, we have decided to
bring the CCBC-Net listserv to a close at the end of this year.
We'll still be talking about books for children and teens, publishing trends,
and essential issues in the world of children's and young adult literature both
here at the CCBC and online, via the CCBC's blog, CCBlogC: http://ccblogc.blogspot.com/
Look for more author and illustrator interviews, too. That's one thing we look
forward to carrying forward in this new forum. As with CCBC-Net, we always
welcome your suggestions of topics for discussion.
The CCBC archives will still be here, too, so when you want to call upon that
great discussion in February of 2014 on multicultural literature, for example,
or our discussions of edgy young adult literature in 2003 and again in 2005, or
nonlinear narratives back in October 1998, you still can. You can scroll down
through a complete list of the topics at: http://ccbc.education.wisc.edu/ccbcnet/archives.asp.

Thank you for being part of the CCBC-Net community. We hope you'll continue to

I shall greatly miss continuing to read the posts which were continually smart
and often brave in discussing what matters today in literature for young people.
It became in my view wonderful tool for young people in publishing as well.
Though gone for now I shall look forward to a new Phoenix. KT particularly
thanks to you in this soon to be New Year. George Nicholson

always thought of you as being wonderfully smart and astute…a leader, not a

Although I have only been on this listserv a couple of years, I agree
with all these comments. This listserv has been something I have
looked forward to every day, and it has enriched my life as a reader
and writer. The monthly books to read and input from the books'
authors, as well as the monthly topic discussions have all been
highlights. I may not have sent questions, but I read the books,
enjoyed hearing the authors' points of view, and thought about the
topics being discussed. I believe there are many books I would not
have known about, or read, had they not been mentioned. It also gave
me insight into the passion of so many for books. My Christmas season
just got a little sadder knowing none of this will be there in the new
year.
Thank you so much for all your work in keeping this going and for
allowing me to be a member.

Very sad to see this come to an end, although I understand and appreciate the
reasons for it. This listserv was particularly wonderful for me during the years
I was at home raising my young children (now 22 and18) as a way to stay
connected and engaged with the field. It was on this list that I first heard of
a book about a young orphan who receives an invitation to a school of wizardry!
More importantly, I've had my eyes opened to so many perspectives, and found and
read so many books that I might never have discovered at all. I look forward to
reading the CCBC's blog, and hope that the fascinating and enlightening
discussions with input from many voices will continue. Thanks to KT, Ginny Moore
Kruse, and all the staff members of the CCBC present and past.

I am sorry to see you go and thank you for keeping this wonderful discussion for
the past 20 years. As a graduate of the SLIS at UW-Madison who then moved far
away, I appreciated this opportunity to keep in touch, as well as the valuable
insights I found here and the lovely people I met in the course of our
dialogues. I especially appreciate your featuring The Pirate Tree three years
ago, which made a difference for our young review blog and helped us to build
readership and visibility Unfortunately, I have not found blogs to be as
effective in encouraging peer-to-peer dialogue (and this is coming from someone
who blogs not only for The Pirate Tree but also for a local newspaper and keeps
a personal blog with an intercultural focus). Would you consider a Facebook
group (open or closed) as a platform for discussion? I'm part of several
thriving discussion groups there and Facebook seems to be the place where other
listservs have migrated.

To: ccbc-net_at_lists.wisc.edu
Dear CCBC-Net Community,
When CCBC-Net began in the spring of 1995, we wanted to offer a new way to
engage in discussion of books for children and teens. Our first topical
discussion was held in July of that year. We’ve been exploring individual books,
topics
and issues in the world of literature for children and teens on a monthly basis
ever since.

Across CCBC-Net's twenty year history, there have been thousands of posts as
you, members of the CCBC-Net community, have shared your insights, observations,
perspectives, experiences, and enthusiasm around books for youth. At the time
we launched CCBC-Net, listservs were on the cutting edge, and ours allowed for
a vibrant, lively discussion of subjects near and dear to our hearts and our
professions. We have had over 2,000 subscribers from all over the world and from
many walks of life,
and the listserv has seen some great discussions.

Today, while listservs still have a place, they have been joined by blogs,
Twitter feeds, Pinterest posts, and other forms of social media that offer
different ways to connect and engage. Listservs are no longer the go-to form of
social
media for discussion and, as a result, we have observed a sharp decline in
activity on CCBC-Net over the past few years. Our attempt to revitalize
CCBC-Net in 2014 with changes that included individual book discussions and Q&A
with authors and illustrators
 – while illuminating -- did little to increase participation.

For this reason, after much consideration and discussion, we have decided to
bring the CCBC-Net listserv to a close at the end of this year.

We’ll still be talking about books for children and teens, publishing trends,
and essential issues in the world of children's and young adult literature both
here at the CCBC and online, via the CCBC’s blog, CCBlogC:
http://ccblogc.blogspot.com/ Look for more author and illustrator interviews,
too. That’s one thing we look forward to carrying forward in this new forum. As
with CCBC-Net, we always welcome your suggestions of topics
 for discussion.
The CCBC archives will still be here, too, so when you want to call upon that
great discussion in February of 2014 on multicultural literature, for example,
or our discussions of edgy young adult literature in 2003 and again in 2005, or
nonlinear narratives back in October 1998, you still can. You can scroll down
through a complete list of the topics at:
http://ccbc.education.wisc.edu/ccbcnet/archives.asp. Click on the link on the
page to access specific discussion. Login: ccbc-net. Password: Look4Posts
Thank you for being part of the CCBC-Net community. We hope you’ll continue to
read, reflect, and share your thoughts on the CCBC blog and in other ways, too.
Sincerely,

KT Horning, CCBC Director

Greetings, CCBC-Net Community -
Thank you, Julie Deaver, for articulating what for me became a
significant dimension of CCBC-Net: Community. You observed that "the
idea we could form a community and talk about books was amazing." We
were all learning what to do and how to do it - effectively. As K.T.
wrote yesterday, initially there were pages of instructions about
functioning within CCBC-Net. The UW-School of Education provided both
the impetus and technological support. (Here's a shout-out to Chris
Dowling who was a vital player in our "backstage" CCBC-Net community for
so long.) We really did not know what to expect. We wanted to develop a
unique way to use CCBC resources in order to make a unique contribution
to the wider world. We really had little idea what that might mean for
all of you, or for us. The moment when I really began to grasp the
concept of the CCBC-Net community occurred during our discussion of the
marvelous book "Dear Genius: The Letters of Ursula Nordstrom" collected
and edited by Leonard Marcus. During that August I had traveled to
England for one of the splendid institutes created by Children's
Literature New England (CLNE). Midst an opening reception all
conversations with me were based upon the on-going CCBC-Net discussion
of "Dear Genius." It seemed as if readers, writers, artists, editors,
publishers, reviewers, parents, and others had become united within the
same virtual space. Due to the CCBC-Net participation of many who cared
about the past and present of books, about where and how they originate,
about where and how they resonate, a community had become energized. The
community included people who had stepped up to comment as well as those
who were paying attention without commenting - at least within CCBC-Net.
These people were on our campus, throughout Wisconsin, and even beyond
national and continental borders. Whether or not we always agreed with
each other, we could continue the discussion in person wherever we were,
and we could forward comments to others who hadn't signed on.
Individually and collectively each of us could make a difference, and we
still can. The rumpus will continue.
Peace,
Ginny

My career in libraries began just about the same time as CCBC-Net. I didn't
realize it at the time. I'd been accepted to library school at UW and was
still waffling in the summer of 1995. I saw Helen Oxenbury and John
Burningham that spring/summer in Madison and was introduced to the CCBC. I
actively participated in that July 1995 discussion of Walk Two Moons -- it
was my first taste of in-depth book discussion. Later that year had the
opportunity to meet Sharon Creech . . . again, through the CCBC. It wasn't
long before I was completely in love with libraries and children's
librarianship. My love of discussing books continues and I'm glad that CCBC
net has been a steady presence over the past 20 (!) years. I'll continue to
watch for CCBC Choices to arrive in the mail, check the CCBlogC posts, and
hopefully visit the new CCBC location sometime in the future.
thanks to KT, Ginny, and this wonderful community,

Thank you, everyone, and indeed, it is a sad feeling to let go of this ccbc
community. Where I live has been remote from other children's literary
discussion groups - for ten years on the island of Saipan in the western Pacific
and for the past ten years on the Navajo Nation, Four Corners area. Listening
to the indepth and thoughtful discussions - and controversial! - was my link
to hearing what librarians, teachers, authors, and editors thought about new
books and current issues. What a perspective!
I will miss this community and I thank you.
