Melanie Crowder's middle grade novel PARCHED is set in the near future, after a drought has devastated southern Africa and led to famine, warfare and societal breakdown. The story is told from alternating points of view: a girl, a boy, and the girl's dog. With its futuristic setting, it's a good pair for A LONG WALK TO WATER.
Skila Brown's novel-in-verse, CAMINAR, set in the 1980s, portrays a 12-year-old boy--the lone survivor of a massacre of his Guatemalan village--as he tries to reach his grandmother's village before the soldiers do.
Francesco D'Adamo's IQBAL is a middle-grade novel based on the life of Iqbal Masih, who organized child laborers in Pakistan so that they could attend school rather than work.
I second the recommendation for Coe Booth's KINDA LIKE BROTHERS.
