Hi all,

Back in 2009, the book *Heart of a Shepherd* by Roseanne Parry was published and I read it. I was glad I did not only because it's a beautiful story, but because, really, how many children's books are out there
(spoiler alert) about a boy who discovers he wants to become a priest? It's so crucial I have these books in my toolkit for when I meet the readers who will appreciate them.

I feel the same way about this year's *The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher* by Dana Alison Levy, except that I think this book has even broader appeal because it fits comfortably in some high profile sub-genres: school stories, family stories, humorous stories. It's also about a
"non-traditional family." I wish there were more novels that are funny and touching and memorable about "non-traditional families." I wish we didn't even need to talk about traditional or non-traditional families - that the children's rooms in public libraries were already filled with novels about all kinds of families. But it really isn't. Not yet. So, I wanted to mention this book here. It's received many positive reviews and I'm sure many of you have noted it, but if you haven't read it yourself, treat yourself this holiday season (especially if you are on a state reading list committee!)

Best, Alison
