These will surprise no one, but my favorite middle-grade books this year were:


Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier

El Deafo by Cece Bell

Absolutely Almost by Lisa Graff


I suspect that recognition of Brown Girl Dreaming will continue with the Newbery committee. I'd be happy to see Absolutely Almost get some Newbery love too - it's a hard book to describe, but so good, and I'm not sure many kids are picking it up based on its cover and description.
