I agree with Emily (and Merri) that the visual storytelling gives readers such great insight into what it was like for Cece navigating a world in which she couldn't always tell what was being said around her. What I appreicate just as much about this wonderful book is that all of this is integrated into a story that is, at it's heart, about the search for a friend. That theme, and so many of the incidences and interactions of the story are relatable;universal, as Emily noted. I can certainly remember as a child--and I expect most kids today can relate to---the challenges (and also some good things) of a friend like Laura (bossy), and Ginny (passive-aggressive).
What's remarkable to me is that these characters are given gentle but honest treatment. So we can appreciate good qualities even as we understand they are not the true friend Cece is looking for.
