I want to offer a final thank you to Gene Luen Yang for graciously answering our questions about Boxers and Saints.
Just like Boxers and Saints last year, Cece Bell's El Deafo (Abrams, 2014) has created quite the buzz and garnered much praise this year. If you haven't had the chance to read this touching, funny, clever memoir, I strongly encourage you to spend some time with this GN as soon as possible. A number of us in Wisconsin had the opportunity to read and discuss El Deafo just yesterday at the CCBC's book discussion. Everyone in our book discussion loved this book and seemed to have something different that they appreciated and admired in El Deafo and in Cece Bell's work. One thing in El Deafo that our group was struck by was how skillfully Cece Bell makes her own story have universal and personal appeal. Everyone in our group found some aspect of Cece's story that reminded them of experiences from their own lives -- from "warm fuzzies" to first crushes. And, we all agree that the beauty of the story in El Deafo is truly universal --- the search for a true friend.
What appeals to you about El Deafo? Is there anything you find challenging? Have you shared the book with kids? What are their reactions to El Deafo? Please share your thoughts with us.
Thanks,
Emily
