I see what you're saying, Sharron, and I think that is true... for those of us in the world of children's/YA literature. But not so much for other folks.
When parents come in with their kids, asking for help finding something to read, we inevitably end up in the Graphic Novels section. And when I use that term to introduce the format, 9 times out of 10 I get a sharp glance from the parents, who I assume are thinking the same thing Marc mentioned... "graphic" as a salacious, provocative term. Thankfully I have the books in front of me so the parents can see that they're really nothing of the sort, but it does make one wonder if there's a better way of labeling them.
That said, I'm getting ready to start a Graphic Novel book club for 8-12 y.o.'s, so I'm preparing myself... I think it is going to take a lot of explanation for the parents who aren't down with the lingo!

Dear All, It seems to me that "graphic novel" has become a format and is a term that is used regardless of genre. I encourage my graduate lit students to adopt that usage -- much as "picture book" might be non-fiction, fiction, poetry or whatever -- it is still a picture book. Works for me. Sharron
