I would not count myself as a huge graphic novel reader, as it is not my first choice when I go looking for a book to read. However, I was mesmerized by Boxers and Saints last year and just loved the blend of culture, religion, historical fact, and action. I loved it, but I knew the two titles really worked fabulously when I gave them to my 6th grade son to read. My 6th grade son who will self -proclaim "I don't like to read". What I have found over the years that what he really means is "I am a very picky reader." Great books are great books though, and they transcend his proclamation. (case in point? He read Esperanza Rising in school in 5th grade, and LOVED IT) Back to Boxers and Saints - he quickly devoured the books, so quickly that I was certain he didn't "get it." A couple of questions later, and my son was detailing to me the differences he saw, he was understanding the tension between the two groups, and the only part that needed a bit of explanation was some back story for him on who Joan of Arc was.

With common core standards upheaving curriculum across many of our states, Boxers and Saints would make a fascinating cross curriculum lesson between history, English, and school library classrooms. The display possibilities are wonderful in a library setting, and the format of the story would enable history teachers to teach story boarding to students, and have them create their own stories around a significant time period that they are studying, or they can create parallel stories set in the same timeframe as Boxers and Saints.

I would also love to see it be used as a discussion title in the public library for teens, or the "new adult" reading category. Lots of possibilities here!

Today, let's begin our discussion of Boxers and Saints by Gene Luen Yang
(First Second, 2013).

If you've missed this engaging set of graphic novels, there's excellent photos of the covers, spines, and sample work at First Second posted by Gina Gagliano available here: http://www.firstsecondbooks.com/books/gene-luen-yangs-boxers-saints/.

There are so many aspects of Boxers and Saints that I appreciate, but I want everyone out there to chime in with their observations about Gene's set of graphic novels so I will keep my thoughts brief here. I think what I love most about Boxers and Saints is way it brilliantly and accessibly explores cultural and religious differences. I just itch to see these texts taught in middle school Language Arts classes or high school History classes. I think Boxers and Saints would be the perfect vehicle for a large cross-section of students to learn about subjectivity, a concept some kids find too abstract to internalize. I also just love the way the stories are told through images and words.

Have you read Boxers and Saints? Have you seen students or classes using these books? Share your thoughts here! Also, Gene will be answering our/your questions about Boxers and Saints early next week, so please feel free to post any questions or thoughts about these books.

Thanks!

Emily
