Today, let's begin our discussion of Boxers and Saints by Gene Luen Yang (First Second, 2013).

If you've missed this engaging set of graphic novels, there's excellent photos of the covers, spines, and sample work at First Second posted by Gina Gagliano available here: http://www.firstsecondbooks.com/books/gene-luen-yangs-boxers-saints/.

There are so many aspects of Boxers and Saints that I appreciate, but I want everyone out there to chime in with their observations about Gene's set of graphic novels so I will keep my thoughts brief here. I think what I love most about Boxers and Saints is way it brilliantly and accessibly explores cultural and religious differences. I just itch to see these texts taught in middle school Language Arts classes or high school History classes. I think Boxers and Saints would be the perfect vehicle for a large cross-section of students to learn about subjectivity, a concept some kids find too abstract to internalize. I also just love the way the stories are told through images and words.

Have you read Boxers and Saints? Have you seen students or classes using these books? Share your thoughts here! Also, Gene will be answering our/your questions about Boxers and Saints early next week, so please feel free to post any questions or thoughts about these books.

Thanks!

Emily
