Today, we begin our discussion of "Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales" edited by Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant (Candlewick Press, 2014) which offers various young adult authors' interpretation of monsters and the monstrous.
I hope folks have had the chance to read at least a few of the short stories from this recent anthology full of fantastic fiction from a number of talented authors. Many teens will be thrilled to see stories from favorite authors such as Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, Patrick Ness, Paolo Bacugulpi, and M.T. Anderson. "Monstrous Affections" also offers the opportunity to introduce teen readers to some fabulous speculative fiction writers with whom they be less familiar.
What a great idea for a teen anthology! The introduction provides an accessibly intelligent and teen friendly explanation of the complex ideas of the monstrous and its connection to the teen age. Throughout the antholodgy and across stories, I really appreciated the combination of re-inventing of traditional monsters and the fresh, creative world building which resulted in newly monstrous sensibility. There's even a touching and eery graphic novel style short story. I think teen readers will find a lot to like as well.
Please share your thoughts about "Monstrous Afffections," as well as any insight and responses you've had from teen readers.
